“Country music is now bigger than ever and A Fistful of Mondays is a play that combines country music and line-dancing in a hilarious romantic comedy,” writer Joe Graham tells us.
Coming to Witney’s Corn Exchange next month, rehearsals are already in full swing for the revival, which originally opened in 2009 at the OFS in Oxford to record-breaking audiences.
“The world is in need of some laughs and entertainment, and country music is now bigger than ever. So we felt it was the right time to present a revival of A Fistful of Mondays.”
And with its sequel For a Few Mondays More hot on its heels, Joe felt now was the perfect time to bring A Fistful of Mondays to his home town of Witney via his theatre company Balancing Act.
“I’ve always wanted to engage with audiences in Witney, and the revamp of the Corn Exchange has changed everything. Now that Witney has such an excellent theatre, we are so excited about building our audiences there.”
So what’s A Fistful of Mondays about? “It centres on the lives and loves of members of the Monday Night All Star Line-dancing Group. Despite its country music soundtrack and linedance setting, this is a comedy play for everyone. I wrote it in response to classic Rom Com films such as Notting Hill whose general appeal and entertainment is something I’ve thought that at times theatre missed,” Joe adds.
And with many of the original cast returning enthusiastically to reprise their roles or take on new ones, Joe adds: “Balancing Act has always been like a family and each production is a great family reunion.
Having started that ball rolling last May in Witney with The Murmuration of Starlings – a love story about dementia – to great local acclaim, Balancing Act is now back with this much more light hearted experience.
As for the added bonus of producing the world premiere of sequel For a Few Mondays More in June next year, Joe adds: “It has been my ambition to run these the shows as close togther as possible to give the audience a ‘what happens next?’ to the characters and situation. It’s like long-form situation comedy, and who knows, it could go further if we felt there was a desire.””
“It’s all about highly talented people coming together in a creative environment to present a theatrical experience for audiences way beyond their expectations. Plus all our productions and rehearsal processes are planned to ensure that everyone has a joyous and, at times, life-changing experience.“
A Fistful Of Mondays runs at Witney’s Corn exchange from September 24-28. Book here: https://www.cornexchangewitney.org.uk/event/a-fistful-of-mondays-by-joe-graham
