Permit Room Oxford by Dishoom

Dishoom has announced that its latest site Permit Room Oxford, will open its doors on Friday October 25 on New Inn Hall Street, as its 126 seater all-day bar-café brings some Bombay charm to the city.

Expect its signature Permit Room cocktails and all-day food offering, from drinking snacks and flavoured curries to beloved Dishoom favourites, as well as breakfast Naan Rolls and House Chai for the morning after.

Like a Bombay speakeasy, Permit Rooms were a reaction to the 1949 Prohibition Act in Bombay when cocktail lounges were often set up in the comfort of locals’ living rooms but by the 1960s and 1970s restrictions on drinking began to ease and The Permit Room of Bombay arrived.

Permit Room snacks

Thus an array of ‘drinking food’ awaits, from savoury snacks and vibrant chaats to fresh salads and sharing plates. Dishoom regulars will be relieved to hear their favourites such as the iconic Black Daal and creamy Mattar Paneer, will be on hand, the Crispy Spinach Chaat or the Prawn Rechado in a tangy masala of red chillies, garlic, and ginger served on a banana leaf.

Even the morning after is catered for, Dishoom’s Breakfast Naan Rolls and The Full Permit, ready and waiting.

It goes without saying that The Permit Room‘s cocktails pack a punch, including the launch of a new Rhubarb and Fig Leaf Gose, brewed in partnership with Earth Ale. Other local collaboratiions include Oxford’s New Ground Coffee and Aldens Butchers.

Expect a retro-industrial vibe with exposed concrete and wood panelling, a vibrant mix of art, photography, vinyl covers, Bombay gig posters, and personal photos from friends and family.
