It’s an incredible transformation, the new Cosy Club on Cornmarket Street, now occupying an incredible 7,500 elevated feet of bar and restaurant with the capacity for 320 customers, in what was Northgate House!
Now ready to welcome Oxford through its doors, The Cosy Club‘s Oxford vibe is based around the Biba Department store in London’s 1960s and 70s, having opened on Monday.
From the wallpaper to the vintage furniture, antiques, original paintings, period lighting and even walls of a former bank – the decor is all encompassing and has a real wow factor when you arrive through the door, at the top of the golden stairs.
And while The Cosy Club is a chain (Oxford is it’s 36th venue), the owners have had the city on a priority list for a long time just waiting for the right building to come along.
So when Jesus College was redesigned and the space arose, The Cosy Club struck like lightning, turning the project around from a blank canvas to bohemian central within eight weeks.
And now the doors are open, the waiting is over and everyone from coffee drinkers to cocktail aficionados, private diners and restaurant connaisseurs can now converge en masse.
“We really value ourselves on the great atmosphere and relaxed style of eating and drinking, as well as our food and drink we provide here, The Cosy Club’s Enya Gill said, as she showed us around.
“But more than that it’s about the building itself. So yes, this was definitely the right location for us.
‘We were always aiming for that Biba look with nods to Victorian and the Arts & Crafts movement, a timeless glamour.
“So our design team sources the furniture and paintings from all over the world.
Take the Treasury wall, which houses the private dining area, it’s from an old bank, perfect for the opulent luxury that The Cosy Club is after.
As for its clientele, Enya adds that they aim to offer something for everyone from an extensive breakfast and brunch menu to sharing plates, gluten free veggie and vegan options, steaks and a dazzling cocktail menu.
“We feel that we have a lot to offer Oxford, especially in such a unique venue, something a bit different in terms of our size, venue, interior and food and drink offering,” Enya adds.
“It’s that attention to detail, that balance, so yes we are excited about welcoming everyone in to have a look and try us out. We really want to bring something to Oxford that they haven’t seen before.”
