Wild Goose Theatre is back in Oxford with another hilariously silly and eventful caper, ‘A Sherlock Holmes Christmas‘ at The Source in The Old Courthouse off St Aldate’s from Monday (December 9).
Expect a Christmas party like no other, as Dr John Watson regales you with two of his most festive Sherlock Holmes tales, complete with thrilling chases, genius deductions, and plenty of laughs.
The new comic adaptation of Conan Doyle’s most festive detective stories is written by Wild Goose’s Billy Morton, who says: “We all want to come together and have a laugh at Christmas so this show is the perfect antidote to the grey British winter.
“When I wrote the show, I knew I wanted to capture the spirit of the original texts – and when listening to the stories, was surprised how much humour I found, something often missed in adaptations. So I wanted to focus on bringing out the comedy in Conan Doyle’s tales, as well as adding some of our own,” Billy explains.
Thus the story is told through the farcical narrative of a Christmas party at which Dr John Watson is a guest, cue multi-roles, silly voices, quick costume changes and inventive repurposing of props to transport the audience to the world of Victorian London at Christmas time.
So does it have an age limit? “The show is a bit cheeky at times,” Billy concedes, “so best for kids aged 10+, teenagers and obviously adults, but it’s a great alternative to the panto!”
But the intimate venue means that numbers are limited and with tickets already selling fast, book now to avoid disappointment!
