Cowley Road Carnival is back

After a long-awaited return, The Cowley Road Carnival is back this Sunday (Sept 1) for the first time since 2019!

The carnival team has worked tirelessly to bring this much-loved Oxford tradition back, meaning Sunday will be a day of celebration, as the music, food, fun and events erupt in East Oxford!

Aimed to reflect Oxford’s rich diversity and community spirit, Cowley Road Carnival promises to be packed with entertainment for all ages, featuring local bands, international acts, delicious food, and engaging activities. 

The Manzil Garden Stage will be the carnival’s vibrant heart, showcasing local talent and international stars. Kicking off with Oxford’s youth group TH!NK, the UK’s oldest steel band, Nostalgia, and a show-stopping performance by the UK’s top Soca artist, Scrappy.

The procession will feature 25 groups and over 600 participants, celebrating the cultural diversity of Oxford. From the dynamic beats of Sol Samba to the colourful displays of award-winning Mas Band Jamboulay, the procession will be a true spectacle with groups representing communities from Nepal, Pakistan, Sudan, Ghana, and more.

The Oxford Hoopers, Strawberry Fayre Majorettes, Horns of Plenty, Ark-T Mas Camp, Afro Fusion Dance, Oxford XR Samba Band, Unity Moves/Princess, Pegasus Mas Camp, Zumba Carnival, ChaCha Skates Rolling Vibes, Ola Samba, Asylum Welcome, West Papuan community, Yaram Arts Medieval African Carnival, Flight Club Dance Group and Oxford Timorese Community Association will also feature in the procession

Visitors can also enjoy a funfair, 45+ local food stalls, walkabout performances, improv comedy, belly dancing, and Japanese drumming.

Cowley Road Carnival

Restore Cafe garden will be the alcohol free and chill zone which will have a small stage with a jazz band and Laura Jones & Friends.

Pax Nindi, the Artistic Director, expressed his excitement: “After so many challenges, we’re thrilled to bring the carnival back to Oxford’s streets. This event is a testament to our community’s resilience and passion, and we’re already planning for the future to ensure this tradition continues.”
