Rehearsals for Kids Go Classical!

Starring over 120 young people from across Oxfordshire, the roof of the iconic Sheldonian Theatre will be spectacularly lifted on SUNDAY MARCH 1 in Oxford Opera Company’s KIDS GO CLASSICAL! concert as the united youthful voices join together to perform some of the world’s most famous and popular opera choruses, including music by Verdi, Mozart, Humperdinck and Bizet.

Led by members of the Opera Youth Company, over 120 local 8-16 year-old’s will be performing in the historic venue, having been rehearsing for six months for the grand event.

‘This truly is going to be a concert that will live long in the memory of all who experience it’

The KIDS GO CLASSICAL! concert is even more special and unique because the young singers have been recruited from local schools, Oxford Opera Company’s Education and Outreach team going into schools to introduce the pupils to the incredible world of drama and storytelling as experienced through opera and classical music, supported by CATS (Cotswolds Art Through Schools).

Company CEO and Artistic Director Stuart Pendred says: “It’s been wonderful, humbling and hugely fun to visit the schools and see how willing and open the young people are to learning new music; tackling languages that they might never have encountered before, all with incredible energy, passion an openness to learn.”

This flagship concert is being led by members of Oxford Opera’s Youth Company, and accompanied by the prestigious Oxford Chamber Orchestra. Stuart Pendred will be the only adult performing, the highlight being everyone singing the Toreador Song from Bizet’s Carmen, under the leadership of Oxford Opera Music Director John Warner.

The concert will also feature beautiful orchestral pieces from Strauss, Mascagni and Rossini.

“This truly is going to be a concert that will live long in the memory of all who experience it,” Stuart adds, “and hopefully the start of a life-long love of opera and classical music for everyone involved, as well as a deep understanding of how important the arts are to the well-being of us as individuals, but also as a society.
