Marmite, chilli and hot honey flatbread at The Slow & Steady

The novelty was intoxicating, because what does a Marmite, chilli and hot honey flat bread even taste like? We had to try one, and it was first on our order.

They don’t really do starters at The Slow & Steady on Abingdon Road, their pizza/burger/sides menu tending to arrive at once.

And with a new offer of £5 Dodo and Simplicity burgers on Mondays (from Feb 3) from 5pm, you won’t need an excuse

But the Marmite, chilli and hot honey flat bread needed its moment in the sun. Basically a pizza; its dark, sticky, sweet/sour taste is pretty intense, but the honey, chilli and cheese offset the Marmite. You must try it!

The Slow & Steady

But I digress because if you haven’t been yet, The Slow and Steady opened in Oxford back in September, Dodo Pubs taking it over from Tap Social EXCLUSIVE: Check out The Slow & Steady, Dodo Pubs’ newest hostelry and refurbing it while keeping that community pub vibe.

Think open fires, a large bar, books, paintings, huge outdoor space perfect for the summer, and a spacious open plan party room upstairs, which now boasts a vast flat screen TV on which to watch the Six Nations starting on Saturday, which is manager Mike Carne‘s pride and joy!

Sister pub to The Rickety Press, Rusty Bicycle, Up In Arms and Part & Parcel in Witney, its a safe bet if you’re after some mighty fine pizza and burgers – Dodo does them particularly well.

Marmite, chilli and hot honey done we moved onto the rest, toning down our usual angry wings order for something more moderate, the buffalo wings (£8.50) really hitting the spot, the buffalo sauce sharp, hot and addictive, it comes on the chips too, and we couldn’t get enough.

Burger or pizza…… burger or pizza…… it’s such a hard choice, but when Mike reappeared to take our order we had to give him an answer – The Big D then with a double beef patty, plus cheese, smoky bacon, onion jam, lettuce, burger sauce, ketchup and a bun (£11.50 or an extra £3.50 for the double patty). And the plant-based Symplicity burger with vegan cheese, pickles, onion, lettuce, burger sauce, ketchup and bun (11.75). Succulent, juicy, plentiful and bursting with flavour, both had juices dribbling down our fingers, not a morsel left on our plates. The burgers here are off the scale good.

Throw said buffalo chips (with buttermilk ranch and buffalo sauce) and some truffle and parmesan chips and we were good to go.

Plus a Salami Get This Straight pizza (£14.90) topped with tomato, mozzarella, salami, parmesan, basil and rocket with its doughy charred crust and we were happy as Larry, whoever he is.

Delivery drivers rushed in constantly, but we were able to enjoy our meal in the pub at leisure, a great selection of cocktails, beers and wines available to wash it all down with.

Upstairs at The Slow & Steady

A quick peek upstairs completed the wow factor, all rugby enthusiasts should head this way over the next few months if they fancy a spacious and avid venue, complete with upstairs bar, but as far as we were concerned The Slow & steady ticked all the boxes and being open seven days a week, makes it the perfect pop-in go to.

And with a new offer of £5 Dodo and Simplicity burgers on Mondays (from Feb 3) from 5pm, you won’t need an excuse, because what they do at The Slow & Steady they do briliantly.
